Dear colleagues, As you will have heard, student strikes and protests have been going on at several Austrian universities for three weeks now. Recently, protests have reached Germany, and lecture theatres at several Austrian and German universities remain squatted by protesters. We, the Researchers and Lecturers of the Viennese Universities, declare our full solidarity with the demans of protesting students: A stop to the stranglehold by economic and political interests on teaching and research The democratization of universities in the EU and world-wide Free access to education for all An emancipatory view of education A stop to the precarization of teachers and researchers A review of the so-called Bologna process because the latter has resulted in an unacceptable reduction in the depth and scope of university education in most European countries, combined with a broad debate about the future of the education system, its aims and its methods. Over 700 of us have by now declared their solidarity by signing the following list:http://unsereuni.at/?page_id=1883. For many of us, a tokenistic display of solidarity is not enough. We have therefore decided to join the protests and declared an active strike. This means that we have opened our courses and lectures to debates about the present situation and possible future of the education system and society as a whole. We are also taking an active and visible part in demonstrations. We would ask you, dear colleagues, to display your solidarity in any way possible, and also to help the protesting students, researchers, and lecturers in Austria and Germany by disseminating the attached message. Now is the time to act together and stop the demolition of the education system before the damage done progresses beyond any chance of repair. The plenum of protesting students in Vienna has asked us to forward the attachment to this email to researchers and lecturers all over the world. Kind regards, AG Öffentlichkeitsarbeit Lehrende & Forschende Wien (Teachers & Researchers Vienna) info.squatting.teachers@gmail.com
