Forum and Name

During our last international chat conference (19th Oct.) we couldn't really agree on a logo and name yet.

Let's begin with the name:

Some
also suggest, that we don't need a name for now, since we are not even
a proper network or organization. Furthermore different groups in
different countries need to formulate their goal differently. To some
calling for "free and emancipating education" is reasonable, to others
it makes strategically more sense to first only focus on stopping
top-up fees.

Currently the following names are up for voting:

  • "International Students Movement"
    (Pro:
this name is very general and doesn't specify the aims; we also have a
logo with that name - see below ---- Contra: it excludes other groups
who are also involved in this struggle, such as teaching staff)

  • "Global Action for Free Education" [G.A.F.E.]
    (Contra:
we don't just focus on the costs (tuition fees)/accessibility of
education, but also the content - meaning the increasing influence of
corporate actors on education systems; and the word "free")

  • "International Movement against the Commercialization of Education"
    (Pro:
it describes what we are struggling against, but still keeps it
general, so everybody can use it --- Contra: to some it doesn't sound
"aggressive" enough and it might be too long)

If
you want to suggest another name, then please just leave a comment in
this forum. So now we need to decide, if we take any of the names
suggested here or no name at all!
The decision will be based on the
comments left in this forum and the result will be announced during our
next chat conference coming sunday.

Here are two suggestions for a logo and web-banner design:

If you want to suggest another logo, then please post it in this forum.
One activist also suggested, that we could use both (or even more logos).

Please vote, which design you prefer and the result will be announced during the next chat conference as well.

Hi,

First of all I prefer the first logo, the visual is better,
but we should modify it with a bigger "$" on the university because if
we print it in black and white, people will think we want to get rid of
education, and not commercialization of education ...

For the
name, I also agree that this is more of a network now, but as for the
call, if a name is created, people don't need to approve the name to
approve the actions like the international action day.

I will
vote for the "International Student Movement" because that way it is
more open, and teaching staff can still support it - don't forget that
we are ALL students and that the whole society should be able to access
to university during the whole life.

Reply from Mark Conroy.

I think the first logos are better for a website. The second one will
be cool for a page that can have images that people can use on their
own sites/blogs to link to us.

Also, "emancipation" should read "emancipating" in both of the first two logos.

As I sayed in the chat I believe GAFE is the best.... Of course first I
need to state that it would be helpfull to have a name and a logo,
because that way ppl can adress us or indentify with us easier.... The
single name and logo somehow is an actual and visual proof of our
combined powers and efforts. I propose the GAFE idea because I think it
includes everything we stand for, it's kinda easy as an acronym, and is
neither too aggresive or defensive. From the logos I find the 2nd one
more  novel, tough I have some worries it would be considered too
radical by some moderate thinkers.
Also I feel like the GAFE name
should include the word public, 'cause let's be realistic we're never
gonna achieve trully FREE education if it is run by privates: always
the laws of market will affect the contex of our studies....

PS. Only 3 answers? This is kinda disapointing....
