Massive cuts to post-secondary education transfer payments in the 90s
lead to increased tuition fees, reducing access to education.
A
wide variety of studies show that higher fees precipitate declining
rates of participation among low and middle income Canadians. In 2002
Stats Canada reported as such.
Several studies have been
undertaken to examine the deregulation of tuition fees in Ontario.
There's a startling decline of students from lower and middle-income
homes. Ontario continues to increase fees and has deregulated graduate,
professional, and some college fees.
The hard-fought freezes
and reductions that have been won in some provinces are under attack by
those who would have students shoulder more of the funding burden.
WE MUST HALT TUITION FEE INCREASES AND RESTORE FEDERAL TRANSFER PAYMENTS FOR POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION NOW.
