THOUGHTS ON "DISCUSSION PAPER"

After the University of Vienna closed down the last squatted Hall (AULA AM CAMPUS), our activity is focusing on the European-wide DAY OF ACTION ON JUNE 9 (and 16), 2010, with a WORKING GROUP active on creating a European-/World-wide AUTONOMOUS LEFT-WING UNIVERSITY NETWORK.
Based on a host of "ALTERNATIVE LECTURES & SEMINARS" which germinated from the ALTERNATIVE SUMMIT AGAINST THE BOLOGNA SUMMIT (VIENNA, March 11 - 14), we are convinced that such a network makes sense and is feasible to develop: The objectives are clear & simple:
We are opposed to being forced to follow the well-trodden (and frequently non-sensical) curricula predetrmined by often opaque "curricular commissions" which are controlled by well-entrenched interest groups. Instead, let us create a viable world-wide autonomous network of critical scientists working within the established university systems, who are prepared to work out the principles and administrative details for FREE/INDEPENDENT CURRICULA and corresponding procedures for graduation (Master & Ph.D.) that is recognized everywhere in the world!
That way, it would be perfectly possible for someone who is doing a master´s degree. e.g., with a major in international economics, to combine that with fields which - for the time being, at least - are "off limits": That may be ecology, geography, meteorology, engineering, anthropology, history, languages, literature, philosophy, or theology ... I am sorry, but if I am a sharp thinker who is working on some kind of issues related to any of these fields, some kind of "free" combination with these (or other) fields might be world-class compared with "the usual stuff" one is forced to regurgitate in so-called "standard curricula".
These days, arguments in favour of "unconventional" or "heterodox" thinking can be heard, literally, ANY day in international news and discussions covering the current bewilderment that has befallen "orthodox" thinkers - these (mostly) guys are frequently "at a complete loss" when it comes to understanding the real world - the idea of such an INDEPENDENT FREE GLOBAL UNIVERSITY, therefore, makes plain sense!
