Globally United Education Protests - November 2010!

During the last chat meeting [Feb.28th] we agreed that co-ordinating education protests on a global level for November 2010 is a good idea.

Since the chat was only joined by about 15 activists in 7 countries we decided not to make any final decisions regarding November and united protests yet.

According to this poll there is a significant interest in having globally co-ordinated protests against the increasing commercialisation and privatisation of public education and for free and emancipatory education in November.

The big question now is, what we should call for: a "Global Week of Action" or a "Global Month of Action"?

So we have the following choices:

  • Declaring November 2010 a "Global Month of Action" [specific name would still need to be discussed]; pro: each group will be more flexible to pick the time frame they prefer to concentrate on within the month + protests have time to develop and create a dynamic; cons: it might be more difficult to portray actions within 30 days as a united protest!
  • Calling for a "Global Week of Action": Nov.1-7th
  • Calling for a "GWA": Nov.8-14th
  • Calling for a "GWA": Nov.15-21st
  • Calling for a "GWA": Nov.22-28th

It is VERY important to agree on a common time frame TOGETHER.
Therefore please leave a message as a comment below stating your preference or send a mail to united.for.education[at]gmail.com

The final chat meeting to decide this together will take place on March7th at 4pm GMT. Education activists worldwide are welcome  - as always :)

The following mail was sent to me today:

Dear friends!

with reference to www.17november.eu

I would like to suggest that it is the week arround the 17th which is concideret the GWA. I know that more and more School Students unions are using the 17th NoW to promote student rights, free educationa and democracy. I belive this falls with in the aims of the GWA, and it therefor only makes sense to have the GWA there!

many regards
//Gwen
