Protests in Austria, Croatia + Germany [June 08-09th]

Education protests in the past two days

::: Austria :::

  • a few hundred activists joined a rally in front of parliament in Vienna yesterday (June 09th) to protest for free education for all.
    some more pictures are available here. the rally was part of a whole day of action near parliament.

::: Croatia :::

  • on june 8th dozens of students stormed the senat meeting at the University of Zagreb to prevent the senat from voting on the introduction of new tuition fees. the actions succesfully prevented the voting procedure. once all members of the senate left the room the protesters held a press conference. pictures + a video are available here.


::: Germany :::

  • up to 85,000 pupils, students, teachers and parents joined demonstrations in more than 70 cities across Germany yesterday. The protest was directed against the increasing commercialisation and privatisation of public education (and the "Bologna-Process"), the increasing competition and pressure to succeed within educational institutions, as well as for free and emancipatory education for all.
  • in Freiburg tracks of the central railway station were blocked for a few hours by hundreds of protesters. Some activists were arrested. Here a short video. The demonstration was joined by 2,000 people.
  • in Erlangen hundreds of students occupied the castle, which is the administration building of the university.
  • about 50 activists temporarily occupied the regional council in Münster.
  • the only large lecture hall of the Catholic University of Aachen was occupied.
  • in Cologne secondary schools were locked to prevent pupils from joining the demonstration. Even the released fire alarm didn't help.
  • in Stuttgart more than 5,000 people joined the demonstration and in Berlin they were close to 7,000.
