Feedback so far

Feedback on the dates during the chat meeting on April 28th:

  • UK: autuumn strike mandate by National Campaign against Fees and Cuts (NCAFC) + trade unions are planning a national strike in November: "so November works better here." October 18th? Semester "starts at best two weeks before, so it'd be a push to recruit, but could be doable."
  • University of Buenos Aires: "in October we may have elections in the UAB, but I don't know if that would be good or bad."
  • Australia & New Zealand: Exam period starts November 3rd with a week off before for study - semester officially ends November 17th/ in New Zealand November 12th. Therefore people in Australia and New Zealand would only be able to join the strike, if it takes place in October.
  • Jadavpur University (Kolkata, India): mid October is exam time at JU - same with other universities in India.
  • Germany: winter semester will only begin on October 15th at most universities. Strike actions will hardly be possible in October.

-----------------------

content for the strike could include, as suggested by an activist in Buenos Aires: Governments worldwide signed the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, that states "Higher education shall be made equally accessible to all, on the basis of capacity, by every appropriate means, and in particular by the progressive introduction of free education". So all these governments agree that higher education should be free, but they do nothing to achieve it. So, why not demand governments to make good on what they signed?

activist in Marburg (germany): "To me the point is to bring people struggling worldwide for free emancipatory education together. increasing the flow of information. connecting. encouraging a public discourse about the function of education. and focus on the actual root of the problem - the global economic system, capitalism."

from Quebec: Keep Poll open for another week

sent May 4:

Is it possible to leave the poll open for a week more? I'm asking cause in Quebec (from what I know, I'd announced it in the CLASSE congress last week after the chat) we haven't been able to do the poll yet/decide if and when we can have the strike. Giving one more week for it would give us time to discuss in general assemblies and make the strike work (make it effective).

I'm not sure the constraints you have and why the poll was closing only a week later, so if it's possible at all, it'd great to give it one more week so we have higher participation and higher rate of effectiveness.
Participants of the chat meeting on May 5th decided to keep the poll open at least for another week - until the next chat meeting. Date and time for that will be decided thru this doodle.

This year will surely be

This year will surely be another big year for the global education strike just as last year was, no matter what day turns out to be the winner of this poll. I hope to read all about the details as time moves forward.

The global education strike and its sites from Gibraltar is about to move forward for 2012 in full force and the first thing on the agenda is to get the date set.
