What is the ISM?
The International Student Movement (ISM) is a communication platform shaped and used by groups and activists around the world struggling against the increasing commercialisation of education and for free emancipatory education to share information, network and make coordinations.
The ISM was initiated at the University of Marburg (Germany) at the end of 2008 and is independent from any political party, union or other institution. It is dominated by grassroots groups/movements and generally open to everyone (students, pupils, lecturers, parents, workers,...) identifying with the struggle for free emancipatory education anywhere in this world.
The communication infrastructure consists of the following tools:
So far the "International Day of Action against the Commercialisation of Education" [Nov.5th 2008], "Reclaim your Education - Global Week of Action" [April 20-29th 2009], "Education is NOT for $A£€ - Global Week of Action" [Nov.5th + 09-18th 2009], "Global Wave of Action for Education" [Oct./Nov. 2010], "Spring of Resistance" [March-May 2011] as well as the "Global Weeks of Action for Education" [Nov. 7-20th 2011] were initiated and coordinated on the platform.
Currently groups conentrate on the GLOBAL EDUCATION STRIKE [Oct.18th + Nov.14-21st 2012].
The following regional chapter were initiated so far: ISM Africa, ISM Asia, "Balkan Student", ISM Greece and ISM North America (ISM-NA).
The ISM is not an organisation or group and therefore can't endorse statements or particular positions. After all there is no decision making process for the ISM as a whole and also can't be.
Many activists and group connected to the ISM support the international joint statement, which is the result of months-long discussions during chat meetings.
The ISM has no financial capabilities, only single groups/individuals connected to the platform might. All are welcome to initiate projects or campaigns in connection with the struggle through the platform.
The platform is being upheld by individual activists who are always happy to get support from fellow activists anywhere. It will continue to exist as long as individuals who are passionate about the struggle help to maintain the infrastructure, improve it and make use of it.
