Nov.17th: Public "Reading Hour" in Casablanca

Students involved with Club Conscience Estudiantine have been organising «A reading hour»/«heure de lecture» for two years. On November 3rd police intervened to stop the event for the first time, saying that it was an «illegal gathering».

During «A reading hour» people come together to read on a particular subject and then have a discussion. Students in Morocco usually arrange such public events every two weeks on thursday. They take place in a public space. First, people read their text for 30-45mins, then the group has a discussion about the theme of the «reading hour» and share what they read. According to activists on the ground the public «reading hour» is an activity that is valuing the contribution of students in society. It is also a type of alternative protest and a great way of conscientisation and engaging in disucssions with other people.

In this context dozens of people gathered at Place Mohammed V/ Place des Pigeons in Casablanca for a next «heure de lecture» on November 17th. Since this reading hour was also meant as a protest against the state intervention on November 3rd the theme was "public space". Last but not least it was also linked to the GLOBAL WAVE of ACTION for FREE EDUCATION.

If people elsewhere in the world want to express their solidarity with the students effected by state repression in Morocco by arranging «A reading hour» themselves, check out this fb event page.
