Students on hunger strike to re-open student union in Senegal!

Hunger Strike at the University Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD)

More than 100 students from the Faculty of Humanities have begun a hunger strike, demanding the re-opening of their union dissolved two years ago for security reasons. Very determined, students of the faculty stormed the lobby of the faculty, to be heard. Mattresses on the floor, the students decided not to eat, starting this Monday, April 19. In the opinion of one of the hunger strikers, Dean of the Faculty of Letters, Saliou Ndiaye, does not wish to receive the students to discuss the establishment of the union.

One of the strikers has been evacuated to the medical university.
Students will not back down until their demands are met. Note that the Rector of the University Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD), Abdou Salam Sall, had, at the 4th General Assembly of the Association for University of La Francophonie (Aouf), argued before the students that "the provisions will made for the establishment of your union a reality" However, from side of the administration of FLSH, no comments were made on the issue.

Solidarity from Marburg [Germany]

Dear activists currently in hunger strike at the University Cheikh Anta Diop,

we, the student representative body of the University in Marburg [Germany], have been following your recent protests and stand united with your struggle for the re-opening of an independent student union at the "Faculté des Lettres et Sciences Humaines".
Students, pupils, teachers, parents and many others are struggling for free education and democratic educational institutions around the world.
Although on a different level the so-called "Bologna Process" is leading to an increasing de-democratisation of universities in Europe.
The idea to call for a "Global Wave of Action for Education", peaking during the week of the "International Students' Day" on Nov.17th, is currently being discussed among education activist groups worldwide and we hope you will talk about this at UCAD as well.

We also want to use this opportunity to suggest making use of the independent platform "International Student Movement" to network and co-ordinate protests on a global level.

Let's get organized and unite. One world, one struggle!

In Solidarity,
AStA Marburg
[student representative body]
