What is the "ISM"?

What is the "International Student Movement"?

The "International Student Movement" [ISM] is a platform used by groups and activists around the world struggling against the increasing privatisation of public education and for free emancipatory education to share information, network and co-ordinate protests together.

The "ISM" was initiated at the University of Marburg [Germany] and is independent from any political parties, unions or other institutions. It is dominated by grassroots groups/movements and generally open to everyone [students, pupils, lecturers, parents, workers,...] identifying with our struggle.

The platform is currently being administered in Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, Nepalese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.

The infrastructure consists of the following tools:

  • a mailing list with close to 1,300 addresses worldwide [~ 7-10 mails per week; to inform and announce]
  • regular international online chat meetings [to co-ordinate, network and discuss; details are communicated via the mailing list and are also available here]
  • a Wiki
  • a twitter channel

So far the "International Day of Action against the Commercialisation of Education" [Nov.5th 2008], "Reclaim your Education - Global Week of Action" [April 20-29th 2009] and the "Education is NOT for $A£€ - Global Week of Action" [Nov.5th + 09-18th 2009] were initiated and coordinated on the platform.

At this stage activists and groups are coordinating the "Global Wave of Action for Education", which will continue at least until the end of November 2010!!
