overview of suggestions
The following are all suggestions sent in to be used as a "united symbol" for the "Global Wave of Action for Education" this fall.
Images were sorted by the date they were sent in. Poll will be open until Aug.8th.
Click on the image to enlarge it.
I Prefer to Two Not Listed
For symbols, I prefer the two at the top of the page that are not listed for voting. The Education barcode being dismantled, and the first with the pencil.
I agree
I agree that the best symbol is the one at the top left of the page which is not listed for voting.
@sojourner and "I agree"
Personally I did not submit these two as suggestions for the following reasons:
These are the main reasons why I didn't submit them personally. Since others also didn't, they are now not among the suggestions.
But of course all are free to use them wherever and whenever they deem suitable regardless of the poll result.
Any Other??
I have a lots of simbols we have used in a lots of places for education en south america, but I don't know how to pass them to you, could you give some idea??
Final deadline for submitting suggestions was July 31st!
Hello Gac FEL,
the deadline was July 31st and it was already being extended several times before. This call was published 4 months ago and there it says that you can either upload it inside the forum yourself or send it to
If more suggestions are added now, it would be strange for those who already casted their vote, because everybody only has the opportunity (unless you go to another PC) to do it once.
Nontheless I suggest that you do share the symbols, it might inspire people to use them after all and not just in connection with the "global wave". If you have problems posting them inside the forum, then you can also send them to and they will be uploaded. You can also let me know in which forum exactly you want them to be uploaded.
I hope this helps.
I agree with the above posters
The two best symbols on this page are at the very top of the page, the education barcode and the pencil-fist. No offense meant, but I'm not a very big fan of any of the designs that I have the ability to vote on. I'd sooner use the top two designs for my signs in protest. Our symbol is representation of our "brand"; if we already have symbols being used, i.e. the two at the top of the page, it makes more sense to me to just stick with those. Just my two cents.
The brain-shopping cart (choice 2) is pretty neat, but I don't feel it projects our message as clearly as the images at the top of the webpage. At the heart of it, we want a symbol that people can look at and clearly understand what we are about.
Re
Hello Mitchell,
the idea behind the "united symbol" is to enable communication on a global level without any language barriers. This is the main point. The result of this poll will serve as a suggestion to people and groups worldwide, if they want to express their support for the "joint statement"! The symbol will not in any way stand for the "International Student Movement".
I explained in my reply above why the barcode and the fist are not among the suggestions.
cheers ~
Please stop it. You know all
Please stop it. You know all these drawings are awful...
You are wasting our time and our hope. We don't need people who make us vote on stupid things which will never be done.
ANYWAY, VOTING IS SHIT. We should decide on consensus, and make the process together.
By chance, you (Mo) forgot the best ideas.
First, mine :)
I said we could use the imagery of pirates. I am sure a lot of people love the pirates here. I am less sure they want to use it for the struggle for/against education but we could just have a discussion about it... I think having just a theme is better than a logo. Even if we are not a lot in our city, we can for example hand out pirate eyes to our friends. It's easy and very funny... you take a photo and it's done. But if you are more people, you can also be very creative. And the pirates' way of thinking is not so far from ours.
Then, the first comment by sojourner on this page was :
"For symbols, I prefer the two at the top of the page that are not listed for voting. The Education barcode being dismantled, and the first with the pencil." and somebody agreed with him.
And because I also appreciated Kasperi's comment on the page for suggestions (at school, we learned more how to use words than paintbrush), I would like to remember you what he said :
"of course i do appreciate symbolism as a means of communication, but i feel that it is prone to mislead people.
as for the symbol for a movement which deals with the issue of emancipation, i simply cannot imagine what sort of symbol could represent my understanding of emancipation. for me, emancipation is a thought which cannot be described adequately in words. furthermore, i think it needs to be felt. personally, i feel that it is a consciousness which is beyond our perception. therefore, in my opinion, our movement is a process which tries to explore what emancipation actually means and thus amplify our cognition.
by no means i wanted to give the expression that i totally reject the use of a (positive) symbol for the movement. i just cannot think of a symbol which i would use for my "identification". also, i would like to stress that as our movement is open to any individual that wants to join, i accept any (positive) symbol that a person chooses to use. and as the symbol that will be used for the next campaign is and should be open to revision and change, i simply hope that a creative mind can get some inspiration of this rather philosophical comment on the topic and come up with the greatest of ideas."
Now, I am sorry for the tone I am using. I am just a bit angry about this attitude. I am just back from a climate camp and very frustrated to see how it is going on here. It could be really better. We just have to improve our tools to communicate in a more democratic way.
Peace,
Adeline

Hello Adeline, if you don't like any of the suggestions, then you can use your own one, or don't use any at all. For more than 3 months everybody had the opportunity to submit design suggestions.
I explained the idea behind the "united symbol" before and I will explain it again later today in another entry, where the results of the poll will be published. We will have to see, if the symbol will turn out to be useful during the "global wave". Personally I really hope so. If you think that it is a waste of time, then that's fine as well. But I think differently about it.
I agree that voting is generally shit. And the point of this poll is not to decide anything in the name of the ISM. Instead the point is to see which symbol suggestion is generally being prefered, so that groups can see which symbol is being generally perfered by people elsewhere.
There is no fixed "we", because there is no fixed group. Therefore decisions in the traditional sense, that effect everyone who can be considered a part of the "we", are not possible. All that can be done on the ISM is to present suggestions and maybe try to find out which the most popular suggestions are.
You never sent an image to or uploaded it inside the forum. Therefore it is not part of the poll. If people don't want to use any of the images, then they don't. It is that simple. The suggestion to have a "united symbol" was online and communicated through the mailing list for a few months now and everybody is free to discuss it, initiate chat meetings about this and suggest alternative concepts using the forum, the mailing list and the chat meetings.
Yes, and? As you can see, I also replied to these comments.
I do remember what he said, and I also agree that it is very hard to find something symbolizing "emancipation". But that is also not the idea behind the "united symbol". The idea is to have a drawing which people around the world can easily use to communicate that they identify with the "joint statement". That's all. So how the symbol looks is not important. It is just important that it is being recognized by others worldwide.
Well, I hope after reading this reply you are less angry and frustrated. The symbol should just make communication on a global level easier. That's all. The suggestion about the "united symbol" was announced many months ago and as I said, all were free to discuss it and suggest alternatives using the chat meetings, forums and mailing list.
Feel free to create new methods and tools of communication to make the process more democratic and share them with everybody.
Peace back,
mo ~
